Indro Honey

Meet Indro's Rooftop Locals

Indro’s newest residents are creating quite a buzz. Right on our rooftop, six very busy beehives have moved in and they’re doing a whole lot more than just making honey.

Installed in September 2024 and cared for by local legends Bee One Third, our European honeybees are helping support the local environment, boost biodiversity and give something sweet back to the community. Because looking after Indro means looking after everything that makes it thrive - the streets, the gardens, the parks… and yes, the bees.

Why do bees matter?

Bees are tiny but mighty. One in every three mouthfuls of food we eat relies on pollination, and these little workers are absolute pros at it.

Here’s how our rooftop bees are helping the Indro community:

  • Boosting local plant life by pollinating gardens, parks and trees across the surrounding suburbs
  • Supporting fruiting and flowering, from native plants to backyard citrus trees and herbs
  • Encouraging biodiversity, helping create healthier urban ecosystems for birds, insects and wildlife
  • Producing truly local honey, shaped by the unique plants of the Indooroopilly area
  • Creating learning moments, connecting our community with urban sustainability and food systems

In short? They’re small, social and productive which is why we're obsessed with them!

Where do our bees go?

Our bees don’t just hang around the rooftop. In fact, they’re explorers.

Honeybees typically forage within 2 - 3 kilometres of their hive, meaning our bees are cruising across Indooroopilly’s streets, river corridors, parks and backyards every single day.

They’re visiting flowering favourites like:

Native superstars:

  • Grevillea & Banksia
  • Bottlebrush & Honey Myrtle
  • Tea Tree & Wattles
  • Eucalyptus along green corridors
  • Golden Penda (a local icon, just like Indro)

And Garden favourites:

  • Lavender & salvias
  • Citrus and passionfruit vines
  • Flowering herbs like basil
  • Native daisies and groundcovers

This diverse mix gives our bees a balanced diet and gives our honey its rich, seasonal, distinctly local flavour.

The Honey?

Our six hives produce around 240kg of honey each year. But this isn’t just honey, it’s neighbourhood honey.

The taste, colour and character are directly influenced by the plants growing in and around Indooroopilly. Every jar is basically a delicious snapshot of our local landscape.

Sweet, right? Stay tuned to find out how you can get some!

Bee‑lieve it or not:

  • One hive can house 40,000–60,000 bees during peak season
  • A single bee visits thousands of flowers a day, but only makes about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime
  • Bees communicate using a ‘waggle dance’ (yes, really) to show others where the good flowers are
  • Urban bees often outperform rural bees thanks to the wide variety of flowering plants in cities

Our rooftop hives are just one way we’re working to reduce our environmental footprint and support local initiatives. Partnering with Brisbane‑based beekeepers, Bee One Third helps ensure our bees are cared for responsibly, ethically and with expert local knowledge.

Because sustainability isn’t a trend for us, it’s a long‑term commitment.

Our rooftop bees are just getting started and so are we. There’ll be sweet ways to learn more and get involved coming soon.

Stay tuned. We’ll be sharing how you can join the buzz before you know it.
