Grow your own indoor avocado tree

Avocados are the ultimate super-food and not to mention – super-tasty! High in potassium, low in sugar and great for strong bones, avocados are the perfect edition to a balanced diet.

If you love an avocado, take it to the next level by growing your own tree that will be cutest addition to your kitchen windowsill, it’s as simple as following the steps below:

1. REMOVE THE PIT
Firstly, enjoy eating your delicious avocado (check out our recipe for a tasty guacamole below!)

Then, making sure you don’t cut the pit, carefully remove the pit from the avocado and give it a clean. Leave the brown skin on the pit as this protects the seed.

2. INSERT YOUR TOOTHPICKS
Have a look over your pit and see if you can spot the end with the smaller top (where the sprout grows) and a larger bottom (where the roots grow in the water).

Evenly, but firmly, insert three toothpicks around the parameter of the seed. This will act as a perch to stop your entire seed being submerged in the water.

3. POP IT IN WATER
Pop the seed half-submerged into a glass of water and make sure it receives plenty of warm sunshine.

4. WATCH IT GROW!
This can take up to 8 weeks so make sure you regularly change the water to keep the glass fresh. Before you know it, you will see your little seed grow roots and pop out a little sprout!

5. POT IT IN SOIL
When your root gets to about 15cm, give it a trim to about 8cm, then wait for it to grow back to the original length– this will encourage growth of lots of new strong roots.

Plant your seed into a 25cm diameter pot (tip – make it a feature in your home by choosing a pot with plenty of style), leaving the top half of the seed exposed. Keep your new plant in a nice warm, sunny position and keep the soil moist, but not too wet.

Before you know it, you’ll have another cute addition to your plant collection!
